Google Business Profile

Are you still open?

By Joel Miller · · 3 min read

Walk into a good grocery store at 7 a.m. and someone is already in the cereal aisle.

They're pulling boxes to the front of the shelf. Lining up the labels. Filling the gap where someone grabbed the last box of Cheerios last night.

Over in produce, someone else is moving the fresh apples to the top and pulling the bruised ones.

Grocers call this facing. Customers never think about it. But they feel it the second they walk in. A faced store looks open and cared for.

When nobody straightens the shelves, the store looks like it's going out of business, even when it's doing fine.

Your Google Business Profile is a shelf.

Most advice about Google profiles is about the words on them: the keywords and details that tell AI what you do. That's what's on the shelf, and it matters.

But AI also checks whether anyone has touched the shelf lately.

More people don't search anymore. They ask. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found that 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools to find local businesses. A year earlier, it was 6%.

AI use to find local businesses jumped from 6% to 45% in one year Share of consumers who used ChatGPT or other AI tools to find a local business: 6% in 2025, 45% in 2026. 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 6% 45% 2025 2026 7.5× in one year

"Who's a good plumber near me?" Google's AI answers. So do ChatGPT, Gemini and the rest. They don't hand back twenty names. They pick a few.

Their job is to give an answer the person won't regret. So they lean toward businesses that look alive right now.

A profile with recent photos, reviews, and listed business hours looks faced. Someone is minding the store.

A profile with a four-year-old storefront photo and a review from two years ago looks like the dented box shoved to the back. Maybe it's fine. Hard to tell. Easier to grab the one in front.

Nobody tells you that happened. You just don't get the call.

And that call is worth money. Google says customers are 70% more likely to visit a business with a complete profile, and 50% more likely to consider buying from it. That's Google talking about its own shelf.

Here's the part most owners miss. Facing is never done.

The grocer who straightened the aisle at 7 a.m. will do it again at noon. And again tomorrow. Customers keep reaching in. The shelf keeps getting messy. That isn't a failure. That's what shelves do.

Your profile works the same way. A review comes in. A photo gets old. Holiday hours change. Something is always out of place.

Most owners stock the shelf once and walk away.

The attention is the job.

You know you're open.

The AI only knows what your shelf tells it.
